NICOLE Fall Workshop 2026 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands

We are pleased to announce that the NICOLE Fall Workshop 2026 will take place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from 28–30 October 2026.
The workshop will explore the theme: ‘From Legacy to Lifecycle: Managing Contaminated Land for Climate, Nature and Planetary Boundaries’
Topics/questions that will be addressed:
- What does a “safe operating space” for an industrial site look like?
- How do we measure biodiversity recovery after remediation?
- Where and how can we enhance biodiversity during the production period, potentially on a temporary basis?
- Can we define remediation targets that are aligned with planetary boundaries? And how can these be implemented in remediation plans in practice?
- How do we manage trade-offs between local risk reduction and global sustainability goals?
- Who is responsible when pollution contributes to the exceedance of planetary boundaries? How does this relate to the delineation of liabilities?
- When is remediation considered sufficient in the context of finite planetary capacity?
